Spongy Tangram Shapes

I love Maths! I've also been quite lax with helping Eve along with her autonomous education. I mean, how do you know if you're interested in something until you know something about it?

Anyway. After we did a little crafting this morning involving glitter, beads, sequins and food colouring http://happyhooligans.wordpress.com/2011/08/15/crafts-for-little-people/ (all of Eves most favourite things!) after looking for the glitter I ended up with some sponges in my hands with a plan to cut some shapes for stamp painting with later on. Well I did a few shapes and we talked about them a bit, but then I was suddenly inspired to make a Tangram set for both of the monkeys!

She put them together with a little direction for the first time :)

Willow is more interested in stacking them or making abstract shapes

I'm doing a lot better at keeping things vaguely organised :)

I've been thinking about doing this with Eve for ages but it annoys me that the cardboard always gets bent or ripped or the edges bumped. It's something I would have to do away from the smaller two if done with paper or cardboard. Hurrah for a solution!

I think this would actually be just as good for older kids as the texture of the sponge definitely adds something to the experience.

There are loads of Tangram websites out there and fantastic shapes to be made. It is a brilliant activity for all ages... It even keeps me occupied!

I'd love to hear your thoughts... however.... if you don't have anything nice to say, please don't say anything at all :)
